For years the “winning” Etsy title was a comma-stuffed wall of keywords. In 2026 that title actively hurts you. Etsy’s current guidance rewards short, human-readable titles that lead with a clear noun phrase — and it penalizes keyword dumps.
The new rules
- Under ~15 words. Long, repetitive titles read as spam.
- Lead with a noun phrase that says what the item IS. The first ~40 characters carry the most search weight — and on mobile they’re all a shopper sees before the title truncates.
- At most three key details after the noun (material, size, style, a concrete spec buyers filter by).
- Occasion and recipient phrases go in TAGS, not the title. “Gift for him,” “birthday gift,” “bridesmaid” — these belong in your 13 tags.
- No pipe-stuffed keyword chains. If it doesn’t read like something a person would say out loud, rewrite it.
Before and after
Old (penalized): “Personalized Name Necklace, Custom Necklace, Gift for Her, Birthday Gift, Bridesmaid Gift, Dainty Gold Necklace, Mom Gift, Christmas Gift…”
2026 (rewarded): “Custom Name Necklace — 18K Gold-Plated, Dainty Personalized Pendant.” Clean noun phrase, the highest-value keywords in the first 40 characters, the gifting angles moved to tags.
Why Etsy did this
Most shopping is on mobile, where only the first line of a title shows. Readable titles convert better, and de-duplicating keyword spam makes search results more useful. Etsy is ranking for the shopper, so you should write for the shopper.
You don’t have to guess the formula. The
DSPX Listing Studio writes every title to this exact 2026 regime — noun-first, front-loaded keywords, occasion words pushed to the tags — and
Etsy SEO scores flag any listing whose title still reads like the old keyword dump so you can fix it in one pass.
What to do this week
- Open your best sellers and rewrite each title: noun phrase first, under 15 words.
- Move every “gift/occasion/recipient” phrase from the title into your tags.
- Check the first 40 characters — are your most important keywords there?
